Home is where your Bag is: Tobi and Marcel
We are Tobi and Marcel, two good friends who have been running this travel blog since 2012. The original idea behind Home is where your Bag is was to give our family and friends a glimpse into our planned round-the-world trip in 2013.
That round-the-world trip eventually became more of a journey through Southeast Asia and Australia/Oceania because we changed our plans along the way. We fell in love with the beauty and culture of Southeast Asia, and the project quickly grew into one of the largest German-language travel blogs focusing on the region.

Over the years, many more trips to Thailand, Indonesia, and neighboring countries followed. Thailand ultimately became our home base, allowing us to get to know the country and its culture in depth.
Today, we also love the contrast of exploring the cities and natural landscapes of Europe. Alongside Southeast Asia, you will find travel tips and stories about Germany, Austria, Eastern Europe, and more. Our fascination with places such as Australia, Japan, and Hong Kong has also grown, so the blog includes plenty of firsthand advice about these destinations.
We are now both proud parents and have been traveling with our families for several years. Our travel style has changed a lot as a result, giving us the opportunity to experience familiar places again from a completely new perspective.

Frequently Asked Questions
We receive many questions, and some come up again and again. We have answered the most common ones below.
I’m traveling to … – can you recommend an itinerary?
We are asked about itineraries very often. Questions such as “I’m traveling around Thailand for three weeks – can you recommend an itinerary?” regularly land in our inbox.
Please understand that we can no longer answer these requests personally. Every itinerary is highly individual and depends on factors such as travel style, budget, interests, and pace. Creating a tailored route takes a considerable amount of time.
You will find planning ideas throughout our destination categories and travel articles. If you would like to hear about new route-planning content, you can also sign up for our newsletter.
Where do you book hotels and flights?
We book most hotels through Booking.com because we like its usability and broad selection. The Genius loyalty program can also offer generous discounts. We usually compare those prices with Agoda before choosing the best deal for us.
For flights, Skyscanner gives us a useful first overview. It can also be worth checking the airline’s own website for a better fare.
Do you earn money from this blog?
Yes, we do, and we want to be transparent about it. When you use one of our recommendation links – for example, to book a hotel or tour – we may receive a small commission. This does not cost you anything extra. We only recommend services that we genuinely consider useful or use ourselves.
We invest a lot of time and work into providing our travel tips and local insights free of charge. Affiliate commissions help us keep the blog available to everyone.
It’s my first trip to Southeast Asia. Which destinations are beginner-friendly?
Thailand is a popular choice for first-time visitors to Southeast Asia. The tourist infrastructure is well developed, especially in places such as Phuket, Koh Samui, Krabi, Chiang Mai, and Bangkok.
Malaysia is another excellent option. English is widely spoken, which makes communication relatively easy, and Malaysia combines well with Thailand by bus, train, or plane.
Many parts of Indonesia, including Bali and Lombok, are also easy to explore as a first-time visitor. If you want to experience a spectacular modern city, consider a stopover in Singapore. Vietnam can work well too, although traffic and language barriers may take a little more adjustment.
